Eugene Merril Deitch was an American-Czech illustrator, animator, comics artist, and film director. Based in Prague since 1959, Deitch was known for creating animated cartoons such as Munro, Tom Terrific, and Nudnik, as well as his work on the Popeye and Tom and Jerry series.
Deitch, one the directors behind one of world’s most popular cartoons, Tom and Jerry, died in his apartment in Prague, his Czech publisher, Petr Himmel, told The Associated Press.
Born on August 8 in 1924, in Chicago, Deitch, whose full name was Eugene Merrill Deitch, was known for directing some of the most popular animator cartoons, including Popeye the Sailor Man, Munro, Tom Terrific and Nudnik.
He had directed 13 episodes of Tom and Jerry and multiple episodes of the Popeye the Sailor series.
Deitch arrived in Prague in 1959 on a 10-day trip, where he fell in love with his future wife, Zdenka, and decided to settle down in the Czechoslovakian capital. He created some of his best works while living in Prague.
Deitch’s won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1960 for his film Munro. He also received nominations for the same category twice in 1964 for Here’s Nudnik and How to Avoid Friendship.
Another series, Sidney’s Family Tree, which he had co-produced, was nominated for an Academy Award in 1958.
He received the Winsor McCay Award for his lifelong contribution to animation in 2004.
Deitch is survived by his wife and three sons from his first marriage. All his three sons are cartoonists and illustrators

I've read that the job of drawing those frame-by-frame cells was sheer grueling drudgery and your work was immediately washed away so the cell could be used again for another drawing. A very few lucky hardworking souls ever got to move up to more interesting work in the animation business like storyboarding/directing/etc.
Wow, 10 cents for a movie! When I was a kid it was 50 cents.

Think about it: The show is named Tom & Jerry, not Tom vs Jerry. They will always be friends. The name of the show was literally showing that and all of us thought they were some sort of rivals. They were not. And we have seen Tom take care of Jerry when he could've easily killed him. And all the times Tom chased Jerry, Jerry has never actually provoked Tom, he wanted to play with his cat buddy. The meaning goes deeper as you grow up. I have came to a conclusion that even Tom accepted playing with Jerry. Seriously, if Tom had the moment where he finally snapped, he could've ended Jerry or just leave forever and make sure Jerry never finds him. And the show wasn't really one sided towards Jerry, by seeing Jerry survive. In some episodes, Tom would get a taste of his own medicine… Some other episodes, Jerry would be the one who gets a taste of his own medicine. If they were rivals, they would have their own separate shows. However, they didn't. Tom would be nobody without Jerry and Jerry would be nobody without Tom. They were linked in. The first episode has started off with Tom taking care of Jerry, the last episode ends off with Jerry taking care of Tom and realizing that their lives are pathetic and that they only have one thing left… To be best friends till the end.
